USFDA Now Requires Prior Notice for
Food and Feed Shipments

New regulations regarding the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (USFDA) Bioterrorism Act came into effect December 12, 2003. The regulations are for shipments of food and feed to and via the US. Facilities that manufacture, process, pack, distribute, receive or hold food and animal feed for consumption to the US have to register (no charge) with USFDA. In addition, the USFDA requires that they are informed through a prior notice of any food and feed shipped to and via the US. Prior notice must be received and confirmed electronically by the USFDA no more than five days before arrival and, as specified by the mode of transportation, no fewer than: two hours by road; four hours by air or rail; eight hours by water.
